LONDON (AP) 鈥 A final novel by John le Carr茅 will be published this fall, 10 months after the spy writer鈥檚 death at the age of 89.
Publisher Viking said Wednesday that 鈥淪ilverview,鈥 le Carr茅鈥檚 26th novel, will be published Oct. 12, in the week that would have seen his 90th birthday.
The publisher said the book is the only complete, full-length novel left unpublished at the time of le Carr茅鈥檚 death. It centers on a small-town bookseller who is drawn into a spy leak.
Le Carr茅, whose real name was David Cornwell, probed the morally murky world of espionage in the Cold War and its aftermath in books including 鈥淭he Spy Who Came in from the Cold鈥 and 鈥淭inker Tailor Soldier Spy,鈥 which have come to be seen as classics. The last novel published in his lifetime, 鈥淎gent Running in the Field,鈥 was released in 2019.
The writer鈥檚 son, Nick Cornwell, said 鈥淪ilverview鈥 was 鈥渢he authentic le Carr茅, telling one more story.鈥
鈥淭he book is fraught, forensic, lyrical, and fierce, at long last searching the soul of the modern Secret Intelligence Service itself,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a superb and fitting final novel.鈥
