"The early part of this weekend looks quite spectacular."

The Metro Vancouver weather forecast includes a shift to rainy conditions following warm sunshine and climbing temperatures starting on October 9, 2024.

The Metro Vancouver weather forecast includes temperatures climbing several degrees above seasonal averages heading into the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Environment Canada meteorologist Matt Loney says locals might see some showers on Wednesday, Oct. 9 but temperatures should climb to 16 C with a mix of sun and cloud.

A ridge of high pressure is expected to build through the week, with skies clearing heading into the holiday long weekend. Daytime temperatures of 16 C or 17 C are expected in places near the water while highs closer to 18 C or 19 C are expected in areas further inland. Temperatures in the Fraser Valley may climb into the low 20s.

Overnight lows are expected to range between 7 C and 11 C.

These temperatures are several degrees above seasonal averages, which are a high of 14 C and a low of 7 C, based on Environment Canada's historical climate data.

"As we get into next week, we return to what you would expect for this time of the year. The series of systems in a zonal type of flow with a fast jet stream from the central Pacific Ocean," he tells V.I.A.

Organized periods of rain are expected next week although no atmospheric rivers with torrential rain are expected. Temperatures should drop back to seasonal or slightly below.

Loney says atmospheric rivers and other major storm patterns can typically be observed seven to 10 days in advance. Forecast confidence diminishes after the seven-day forecast.

"Halloween is three weeks so there's nothing we can say with certainty. At that point, climatology is your friend and the temperature forecast has a bit more reliability but precipitation can be a coin flip," he notes.

October is expected to see temperatures trending slightly warmer than average but the seasonal forecast doesn't include specific events, such as major storms.

For now, locals should embrace what might feel like a final flourish of summery weather.

"The early part of this weekend looks quite spectacular," he remarks, adding that fall storm season is right around the corner.
