CLEVELAND (AP) 鈥 Hollywood stars and bookended Saturday鈥檚 inductions into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, giving a little stardust to an eclectic lineup that included heavy metal鈥檚 Ozzy Osbourne, hip-hop soul queen soft rockers Foreigner and 83-year-old soul icon
It was a five-hour-plus show that also honored hip-hop trailblazers A Tribe Called Quest, punk pioneers the MC5, the effortless dance music of the soft rock of the beach bum tunes of and the jam band fusion of Dave Matthews Band.
opened the show singing Cher鈥檚 鈥淏elieve鈥 before the 78-year-old icon joined her onstage, giving way to Zendaya who noted that Cher is the only woman to have a No. 1 hit on a Billboard chart in each of the past seven decades. 鈥淐her has got the goods,鈥 Zendaya said before Cher performed a rocking version of 鈥淚f I Could Turn Back Time.鈥
In her speech, Cher thanked her mother for instilling in her to always get back up after defeat. 鈥淚 never give up," she said. "I'm talking to the women 鈥 down and out, we keep going.鈥
Roberts helped induct Dave Matthews Band 鈥 she鈥檚 a self-avowed superfan and she appeared in the band鈥檚 video for the 2005 single, Roberts, wearing a band T-shirt, said the appeal of the group is 鈥渟pontaneous abandon,鈥 adding the first time she danced with her husband was to one ofn their songs.
The jam band, with their mix of funk, folk-rock, jazz, blues and pop, then played 鈥淎nts Marching鈥 鈥 asking the crowd to sing the chorus 鈥 鈥淐rash鈥 and 鈥淪o Much to Say.鈥 The arena was still full when they hit the stage after midnight, with the crowd singing along and swaying.
Matthews hugged Roberts, handed out the trophies to his bandmates, and called the class of 2024 impressive. 鈥淲e're swimming in very deep water here,鈥 he said. He thanked the current and former band members and the bar owner who gave them a home in Charlottesville, Virginia. When he thanked the fans, they roared back.
Dr Dre inducted who is credited with creating a completely new category of music 鈥 hip-hop soul. The nine-time Grammy-winner鈥檚 best-known song is 鈥滷amily Affair鈥 from her triple-platinum 2001 album 鈥淣o More Drama.鈥 鈥淲hen you listen to Mary, you understand you鈥檙e not alone in heartbreak,鈥 Dre said.
Blige, wearing shiny black hat, a sparkly dress and long black gloves and boots, sang a mix of her hits, including 鈥淟ove No Limit,鈥 鈥淏e Happy鈥 and 鈥淔amily Affair.鈥 At the end of her set, a dancer brought up a cloak to wrap around her, in an echo of James Brown. 鈥淢ove with grace. Trust the journey,鈥 she advised. 鈥淵ou are worthy.鈥
inducted saying 鈥淭his is a long-due celebration.鈥 The band had 12 Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 including the 1980 chart-topper 鈥淐elebration鈥 as well as 鈥淐herish,鈥 鈥淕et Down On It,鈥 鈥淛ungle Boogie,鈥 鈥淟adies Night鈥 and 鈥淛oanna.鈥 They鈥檝e been eligible for the hall since 1994.
The Roots helped the band do a medley of hits that got the crowd grooving led by Robert 鈥淜ool鈥 Bell 鈥 bass guitarist, co-founder and last original member 鈥 and longtime singer James 鈥淛T鈥 Taylor. Confetti shot into the arena and Taylor asked the crowd to use their cellphone lights as he read off the names of 10 members who were critical to the band's success.
arrived at the ceremony only a few days after attending a memorial to her longtime friend and collaborator, . Teyana Taylor called her 鈥渢ruly one of a kind鈥 as well as telling off the teleprompter operator for not putting "Ms." before her name. Jennifer Hudson sang 鈥淚鈥檒l Never Love This Way Again鈥 and was joined by Warwick, who also sang 鈥淲alk On By.鈥
Warwick said this year was the third time she was nominated for the Hall. 鈥淚 am so pleased to be here,鈥 she said. 鈥淚'm just going to say this and get off the stage: Thank you, thank you, thank you.鈥
helped induct A Tribe Called Quest 鈥 Q-Tip, Jarobi, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and the late Phife Dawg 鈥 the lone hip-hop group to make the cut this year. Chappelle said the group incorporated "jazz and soul in a way hip-hop had never seen." Queen Latifah, Busta Rhymes, Common, The Roots and De La Soul were on hand to perform a medley of Tribe hits, including 鈥淏onita Applebum,鈥 鈥淪cenario鈥 and 鈥淐an I Kick It?"
introduced and thanked their fans for their tenacity to demand inclusion. The English-American rockers 鈥 with hits like 鈥淐old as Ice,鈥 and 鈥淲aiting for a Girl Like You鈥 鈥 topped the charts in the 1970s and 鈥80s but never made it into the Hall 鈥 much less a ballot 鈥 until last year, despite being eligible for more than 20 years.
Hagar noted that Foreigner currently tours without any original members. 鈥淭hat's how good the songs are,鈥 he said. 鈥淲ho deserves this more than Foreigner?鈥 Demi Lovato and Slash joined the touring Foreigner for 鈥淔eels Like the First Time鈥 and Hagar then took lead for "Hot Blooded." Kelly Clarkson thrilled with a powerful 鈥淚 Want to Know What Love Is鈥 but the arena erupted when original singer Lou Gramm joined her.
Saturday's induction ceremony was at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, where the Hall has promised to return to every few years. A TV special with performance highlights will air on ABC on Jan. 1.
Roger Daltrey of The Who inducted Frampton. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about bloody time!鈥 he said. 鈥淧eter has had the most amazing career of all time. It鈥檚 probably easier to name the people he hasn鈥檛 worked with than the people he has,鈥 Daltrey said.
Frampton earned his way into the Hall in large part on the strength of his 1976 live double album 鈥淔rampton Comes Alive!,鈥 buoyed by the hit songs 鈥淪how Me the Way鈥 and 鈥矪aby, I Love Your Way.鈥 Daltrey noted Frampton has always played with a wide smile.
A fittingly grinning Frampton 鈥 who played at last year's ceremony to honor Sheryl Crow 鈥 brought on Keith Urban to trade licks on 鈥淒o You Feel Like I Do鈥 and showed why he is considered one of rock's great guitarists. He hooked up his famous talk box effect and the crowd roared.
Dave Matthews 鈥 before his band's inducement 鈥 helped honor Buffett with an acoustic version of the late singer-songwriter鈥檚 鈥淎 Pirate Looks at Forty.鈥 James Taylor then came out to call Buffett 鈥 who popularized beach bum soft rock with the escapist song 鈥淢argaritaville鈥 鈥 鈥渓arger-than-life but at the same time right-sized and always authentic.鈥 Taylor, Kenny Chesney and Mac McAnally then performed Buffett's 鈥淐ome Monday.鈥
Musician-actor Jack Black toasted saying that 鈥渉eaven opened up above me鈥 when he first listened to the album 鈥淏lizzard of Ozz.鈥 Black called Osbourne 鈥渢he Jack Nicholson of rock鈥 and joked that his reality TV show 鈥淭he Osbournes鈥 was possibly 鈥渢he most evil thing he ever did.鈥
Osbourne, seated in a throne, credited the late guitarist Randy Rhoads and his wife, Sharon, for his career and life. This is the second time Ozzy has entered the Hall, the first time being in 2006 with the seminal metal band Black Sabbath. A tribute band to the Prince of Darkness 鈥 including Jelly Roll, Billy Idol, Maynard James Keenan, Wolfgang Van Halen, Steve Stevens and Robert Trujillo 鈥 played 鈥淐razy Train,鈥 鈥淢ama, I鈥檓 Coming Home鈥 and 鈥淣o More Tears.鈥
The In Memoriam section included tributes, among others, to Cissy Houston, David Sanborn and Dave Matthews Band performed 鈥淏urning Down the House鈥 from the Talking Heads as fans filled out.
