In the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump's statements about Canada being a 51st state, and threats of hefty tariffs, a reinvigorated "Buy Canadian" movement has taken hold locally and beyond.
Fran莽ois Neville, associate professor of strategic management at the DeGroote School of Business, at McMaster University, was asked in a March 17 online Q&A, with a representative of the school, if the movement will make a difference.
He said it is difficult to say.
"Because it seems that is going to vary based on product categories and certain types of industries," he told writer Matt Innes-Leroux.
"We have categories of products where there is a Canadian equivalent that is readily available at a comparable price. There are other categories of products where it isn鈥檛 as easy to find a Canadian alternative like when we鈥檙e looking at fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and so on. The Buy Canadian movement does seem to be gaining traction, so I would say it will have some impact, but how big that impact will be remains to be seen."
The 麻豆社国产 polled 249 readers and asked the question: Have you shifted your buying habits to purchase more Canadian goods due to U.S. threats?
The vast majority of respondents said they have.
Other polls have found the same thing.
An published in mid-February saw 85 % of surveyed Canadians say they had or planned to replace U.S. products with Canadian one..
The 麻豆社国产 poll ran from Feb. 28, to March 8, 2025.
Of the 249 votes, we can determine that 113 are from within the community.
(Because it is optional for survey takers to declare where they live, the number of locals is likely higher.)
