CBC News Network is turning to Ian Hanomansing for its live prime-time coverage.

The veteran newsman takes over a daily two-hour slot following 鈥淧ower & Politics鈥 starting Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Live from Vancouver, 鈥淗anomansing Tonight鈥 will air weeknights from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET, and lead straight into 鈥淭he National.鈥

The show comes amid an especially heavy avalanche of news around issues including a contentious U.S.-Canada relationship, escalating household costs, and the upcoming federal election.

Hanomansing says he will continue to host CBC Radio's 鈥淐ross Country Checkup鈥 and host the Sunday edition of CBC's flagship news show, 鈥淭he National.鈥

Although Hanomansing says "we're not reinventing the wheel on Tuesday," he says the fact the show is based in Vancouver instead of Toronto will broaden the array of voices and type of stories that otherwise might be seen, such as more content from British Columbia and Alberta.

鈥淗anomansing Tonight鈥 takes over a time-slot held by 鈥淐anada Tonight," hosted by Travis Dhanraj, who is on a leave.

"It is going to be significantly different because your host is different, your location is different," Hanomansing says from Vancouver.

For one thing, Hanomansing will roam the set with a camera in tow, as he did for his previous show, "CBC News Network with Ian Hanomansing."

"We used a Steadicam in 2012 on our program in Vancouver, and we are using the Steadicam again," he said. "So you go over, you talk to somebody, and things flow a little bit more smoothly."

鈥淗anomansing Tonight鈥 will also be available to stream any time on CBC Gem with on-demand segments on YouTube.
