World Class Loggers entertain Squamish

Loggers Sports pros arrive in 麻豆社国产and put on a show

Loggers Sports Association president Bryan Couture sits back in his plastic chair, sighs and looks around as the Al McIntosh Loggers Sports Grounds is cleared of debris from last weekend's shows.

Couture has been involved with the 麻豆社国产Days festival and Loggers Sports for 28 years and he thinks this year's edition was one to be remembered.

"Seeing Stirling Hart break the world record in the tree climb was certainly a memorable moment," he said.

Weekend MC Al McIntosh had his own special moments.

"I would say that this year was as good or better than most I can remember," he said. "There were some really spectacular moments this year."

McIntosh said he enjoyed seeing 麻豆社国产Days Loggers Sports legend Vic Hurford get the honour of kicking off the festivities on Sunday.

The idea behind Hurford being involved came from Couture and Vic's son John, according to Couture.

"Vic has been involved with Loggers Sports since day one," he said. "It's unbelievable the amount of work Vic has done over the years and he still helps out a lot at age 86."

Two brand new aspects to the show that seemed to receive a positive response were the slingshot and the "best seat in the house" concepts.

Both ideas were the brainchild of organizer John Hurford, said Couture. The slingshot was used to deliver shirts and other merchandise into the crowd to keep them riled up while the best seat in the house was a contest in which two lucky fans got to sit in comfortable reclining chairs directly on the Loggers Sports field.

After the success of those two ideas, Couture thinks it's likely they will return for future editions of the Loggers Sports.

Over $35,000 in prize money was handed out to the competitors with Mitch Hewitt taking the coveted Logger of the Day title. He won the underhand chop as well as the spring board chop and the obstacle pole bucking events.

Hewitt's four-year-old son Jake also entertained the crowd with his chopping skills during a break in the action.

Mission's Brad Laughlin placed first in the axe throw, just edging out the logger who traveled the farthest to come to 麻豆社国产- Denmark native Jesper Witzke.

Bill Bischoff of Celista, B.C along with his Washington state partner Branden Sirguy won the double hand bucking event with a time of 15.45 seconds, narrowly defeating the Mission team of Laughlin and Brent Saniger.

Stirling Hart of Maple Ridge posted a world record time in the open climb. Hart made his way up and down the pole in the centre of the Loggers Sport grounds in 17.81 seconds. Nanoose Bay resident Wade Stewart kept the home province momentum going by winning the powersaw tree falling event, cutting down his tree in 19.31 seconds.

The females from the province also failed to disappoint as Ucluelet's Sarah Mooney, along with her partner from Idaho Brenda Pouchnik won the jill and jill hand-bucking event with a time of 9.53 seconds.

Other winners on the day included: Tom Martin (single bucking), Wayne Paulsen (speed bucking), Brian Bartow (chokerman's race and tree topping), Branden Sirguy (standing butcher block chop) and Brenda Pouchnik (ladies triple event).

Saturday's novice competition saw 麻豆社国产resident Tyler Kion wowed the crowd at the Loggers Sports Grounds on July 31, winning the novice chokerman's Canadian championship race with a time of 31.4 seconds.

Kion was the only local to take home a championship but a number of other 麻豆社国产loggers fared well during the novice and intermediate event.

Rob Drygas placed second in the novice climb competition, climbing the tree in the centre of the ground in 24.07 seconds. Adam Kallio, who made the trek to 麻豆社国产from Clatskanie, Oregon, had a time of 16.63 seconds to win the climb.

Drygas also fared well in the novice underhand chop, placing third with a time of 48.65. Brian Gagne of Delta took home first in the chop with an impressive time of 24.62.

In the novice birling Canadian championship competition, Squamish's own Jacqulin McNicol placed third while Ed Campbell of Richmond was in first.

The 麻豆社国产team of Jared Gordon and Allan Carson placed fourth in the intermediate double hand bucking championship. The duo worked together to post a time of 36.29.

The team of Cranbrook's Gerald Gagne and Edmonton's Joe Ritcey took home the title with a time of 24.04.

Gordon also competed in the novice axe throwing competition, placing fourth. Kallio won the competition.

Jessie Bifano and Russell Murray also represented Squamish, placing fourth and fifth in the chokerman's race.

Other winners included Gerald Gagne (intermediate underhand chop), Brock Colliver (intermediate obstacle pole bucking), Derek Pouchnik (novice stock appearing powersaw race), David Green (novice standing block chop) and Brian Bartow (intermediate springboard chop).

Next up for Couture and a number of 麻豆社国产loggers will be a trip to Campbell River to attend the Loggers Sports event there on Aug.7.

That is, as soon as the Al McIntosh Loggers Sports Grounds is completely cleaned up.
