Warm sun, fast water a perfect blend

Whitewater enthusiasts and the public enjoy a day on the Mamquam

It's not an earth shattering secret, nevertheless Mamquam River Access Society director John Harvey let it slip.

"The sun is great," said Harvey, commenting on how Mother Nature had provided an ideal day for the 2010 Mamquam River Whitewater Festival, "but it's for the public. Whitewater kayakers don't really care. They're here for the water!"

And so warm sunshine and cold, fast-moving water, supplemented by music, food, boat demos courtesy MEC, Sea to Sky Kayak Centre and Glenmore Paddling - and even an onsite hot tub - made everything right June 12 for the event which brings whitewater enthusiasts and the public together to appreciate and enjoy nature at its best.

Cosponsored by the MRAS and the 麻豆社国产Paddling Society, and held at the Mamquam River slalom site, five kilometres out the Mamquam Forest Service Road and downriver from the power plant, the event was an opportunity for all to enjoy the recently upgraded facility - including newly rebuilt road and trail access.

"They've done a beautiful job here," said Tudor Davies, a recreational paddler up from Coquitlam for the event. "What a change from when I starting coming here 12 years ago."

While everyone may not notice the site changes, all can certainly appreciate what the Mamquam River has to offer for recreation and pure enjoyment. And that says Harvey is what it's all about.

"Getting people out here," said Harvey.

That - and more hard work - is the key preserving and maintaining the site for ongoing enjoyment.
