麻豆社国产students compete at provincial track meet

Local kids miss podium

Several local high school students competed at the 2010 BC High School Track and Field Championships over two days last week (June 3 and 4).

Grade 11 Howe Sound Secondary School student Brehan Lawrence finished in 13th in men's shot put after hurling the weight 11.68 meters and he tossed a javelin 39.13 meters putting him in 17th place.

And Howe Sound senior Corey Hurrle shot putted his way to 26th place with a distance of 10.77 meters.

Ninth grade student Stephanie Pawluk was invited to compete in the 8/9 division and earned a personal best time of 11:46.75 running 3000 meters in the rain to place 20th.

Another Grade 9 student Jordan Pereis finished 22nd after throwing a shot put 6.90 meters.

"I think it was tough training this year because of course we don't have the facilities at Howe Sound [Secondary School]," said Howe Sound Secondary School athletic director and track coach Sue Pedersen.

Each week the HSSS tack athletes would travel by bus to Don Ross Secondary School to use their facilities.

"If people also recall, all this spring weather we've had - it's been very rainy and wet, so a lot of those kids that made the provincials really made a commitment to get it done."

Grade 8 Don Ross student Myia Antone was also invited to the 8/9 track meet, competing in three events. Antone finished 26th, 20th and 10th in the 100-metre, 200-metre and 400 metre races respectively.

Don Ross Secondary School track coach Anne Bracey said Antone "has the most potential in track and she comes by it naturally."

Bracey said Antone's father Willy was a local track super star back in his hey day.

On the whole, Bracey said the Don Ross has had a superb year, finishing in fifth place in its provincial zone.
