National junior whitewater slalom team announced

Mamquam River provides ideal conditions for trials

The sun shone down on 麻豆社国产this past weekend, creating ideal conditions for the 2010 National Junior Slalom Team Trials.

The team trials, which consisted of four races, took part on the Mamquam River that runs just outside of the 麻豆社国产town limits Sunday (May 16).

Although the river is situated in a serene and tranquil area, the racing this past weekend was anything but, according to Jim Douglas, secretary of the 麻豆社国产Paddling Club, which hosted the event.

Both Saturday and Sunday were filled with excitement, said Douglas, as Canada's best junior athletes competed for their coveted spot on the National Team to get a chance at representing Canada at the Junior World Championships this July 8 to 11 in Foix, France.

"With only three spots available in each category, the competition was significant in each of the disciplines," he said.

In the K1-M category, Ottawa's Michael Taylor captured the top spot.

Behind him were Maximile Petit-Clerc (Beaupre, Quebec), and AJ Cole (Calgary, Alberta).

In the K1-W category, reigning senior National Champion Jazmyne Denhollander (Chilliwack, BC) captured the top spot on the team, and was followed closely by Marissa Dededer (Calgary, Alberta), and Rachael Penman (Ottawa, Ontario).

In the C1-W class, Alexandra McGee (Ottawa, Ontario), was the only athlete selected.

McGee will be the first Canadian C1-W athlete to take part in the Junior World Championships.

The team trials were also used to select the Youth Olympic Team who will compete at this year's Youth Olympic Games in Singapore Aug. 10 to 26.

Two athletes qualified.

Levi Severtson (Calgary, Alberta) will be representing Canada in the K1-M class, and Hayden Daniels (Calgary, Alberta) will be representing Canada in the C1-M class.

The National Senior slalom competition, also hosted by the 麻豆社国产Paddling Club and the Chilliwack Centre of Excellence will be held this coming weekend, May 22 and 23 at Rutherford Creek slalom site, approximately 20 minutes north of Whistler on Highway 99.
