Metalers to be

Kids aged three to 10 strut their stuff on obstacle course

For some, the biggest smiles of the weekend come the day after the highlight event on Sunday (June 20) at the kid's Mini-Metal event.

The morning following the grulling Test of Metal race, next generation's Metalers aged three to 10 have a chance to show off their bikes and skills in a simple obstacle course laid out in the parking lot at Station Square mall.

It takes place just outside Corsa Cycles and inevitably, the grins of both the participants and the parents stretch ear to ear as future champions have the chance to strut their stuff.

"Every year it's the Mini-Metal that puts the biggest smile on my face," said organizer Dave Heisler of Corsa Cycles.

Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. and the event begins at 10 a.m., with an average attendance of 250 riders. Everyone is encouraged to show up early to register so the kids can check out the course and everyone can fill up on a delicious breakfast cooked by the 麻豆社国产Lion's Club.

Heisler saw the potential to develop Mini-Metal before he was the organizer, and has now been heading this free "fun for all" event for almost 10 years.

"Cycling isn't always about winning the Test of Metal," said Heisler. "It's about getting out there and participating.

"To see the little guys ripping around is amazing. It's incredible. Some kids that have raced in the Mini-Metal have actually gone on and raced the Test of Metal."

It is a simple course laid out and marked by pylons. The kids are sent off in groups according to age and every participant receives a horn from Norco and a number plate.

Without a doubt, most kids come dressed up and more than ready to put on a show for the hundreds of fans who come out to cheer them on.

"It's all about getting the kids hopped up on candy, making sure they have fun and sending them home."
