Cristian Oreamuno might want to invest in a hat rack.
The Galileo player scored three goals for the second straight week and the hat trick helped lead his team to a 5-2 victory over Khalsa in week two of the Howe Sound Men's Soccer League on Sunday (Sept. 19).
According to Galileo head coach Ron Nahanee, the team started off slowly but picked up their game in the second half.
"I thought it was a great game overall for us," he said. "It took us a while to get going but I thought we moved the ball really well today."
Oreamuno opened the scoring with a header after a long cross, a formula that Galileo used to its advantage for most of the game.
Oreamuno scored again on a similar play to put Galileo up 2-0 but Richard Collins pulled Khalsa within one after scoring on a penalty kick near the end of the first half.
In the second half, Collins scored again to even the game up but Galileo took the game over from there, scoring three unanswered goals.
Oreamuno scored the eventual game winner and then Gary O'Neil added two of his own for the 5-2 final.
"We had a lot of nice crosses and passing out there today," said Nahanee. "But I still think the guys need to work on their fitness and conditioning if we want to stay on top."
Khalsa coach Jack Bir gave Galileo credit for the strong game they played.
"They played better than us and played more like a team," he said. "They definitely have more chemistry than us. They've played together for years and all summer, while we have a fairly new team that still needs to gel."
Bir also said Khalsa needs to learn to play more like a team.
"We need to move around the ball more," he said. "This is a team sport and these guys need to learn to work as a team if they want to win. More practice and more training should make us better."
The win launches Galileo into first place in the HSMSL, with a record of 2-0 while Khalsa falls to 1-1.
In the day's other game, Dyer Straits crushed Zephyr by a score of 7-1. Austin Sweeney and Istvan Richter scored two for Dyer Straits, with Ronan Dean, Charles Carter and Joe Davidson adding singles. Chris Golaiy scored the lone goal for Zephyr.
The Dyer Straits now sit at one win and one tie while Zephyr stands at 0-2.
There was a third game planned which was going to feature the Ellis Moving Eagles against the Howe Sound Brewing team but the game was cancelled due to a lack of players on the Howe Sound Brewing side.
The league announced that they are looking for players to fill the team and those interested can contact Jose Oreamuno at 604-898-5579 or via e-mail at [email protected].
