European football coaches return

Scouts eyeing 麻豆社国产athletes

Keepers, forwards and everyone in between are invited to tighten up their game play by attending a European coached soccer camp in 麻豆社国产starting on Monday July 5.

"We have really high level people coming from Italy to look at the talent in Squamish," said GISS program director Tim O'Brien.

The four-day Genova International School of Soccer (GISS) camp provides corridor and Lower Mainland soccer players access to top-notch European training methods and coaches.

Professional European league coaches will be on site providing instruction to players of all ages and skill level. Italian national team U-21 coach, Marco Montersor, GISS Italy technical coach Mauro Zironelli and GISS director Morris Pagiello will share their expertise with attendees while a hand full of European talent scouts will observe.

Attendees will also have the chance to earn a spot on the GISS showcase tour or be invited to attend the GISS Academy in Ovado, Italy.

"It's a camp for players looking to get a higher level of coaching but also it serves the purpose of identifying high end players who have the ability to be professional players in Italy and Europe," O'Brien said.

GISS is affiliated with professional leagues in Italy, Switzerland, Spain and The Netherlands.

O'Brien said he wants to bring high quality coaching to young Canadian soccer players while giving them the confidence to pursue their athletic dreams.

"We really just hope to give 麻豆社国产and Vancouver players a path way to furthering their career in soccer because right now as it stands there's a very few number of players here in B.C. that carry on as professional soccer players."

Within the last two years seven Canadian athletes have been recruited through GISS to play professional soccer in Europe.

"It's not just about the Whitecaps or university soccer for Canadian kids, there's a way for them to become professional players."

The camp is open to men and women between the ages of eight and 25 and does not require referrals or try outs to attend. Camp groups will be broken down by age and skill levels.

O'Brien said the camp is suitable for athletes of all skill level because coaches can see potential in youngsters, even if they are not the all star player.

"There's always the one or two stand outs but quite honestly there's always kids that have all the raw material and desire these guys can identify and really inspire kids to really get better."

The GISS camp starts on Monday July 5 and runs until Thursday July 8, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The clinic will be held at Howe Sound Secondary School field.

Registration costs $300 plus tax and space is limited.

Participants will receive a full Umbro uniform including a jersey, shorts and socks.

In an effort to encourage local club involvement, if at least five soccer players from one league sign up for the camp, GISS is offering a $20 incentive to the league for each player referred to the camp.

Players who register before Monday June 7 are eligible to win a spot in the camp free of cost.

Coaching clinics are also available for local coaches wishing to bring their A game to the sidelines.
