Equestrian riders show off skills, style

Horse show diversifies competition divisions

Riders of all styles and skill levels in the Sea to Sky Corridor are saddling up for the season opener show on Sunday (May 16) hosted by the 麻豆社国产Valley Equestrian Association (SVEA).

With the arrival of a new event co-ordinator Kristy Pakstas, the show will now include a dressage division along with the hack, hunter and jumper divisions. Dressage includes a series of pre-determined tests of various manoeuvres including the extended trot.

Pakstas said the increased diversification of divisions allows for riders of practically any skill level to participate in the SVEA horse show.

"There's lots of classes for all levels of ability from lead-blind - kids that can't even steer their own horses - and up," said the co-ordinator. "We've tried to make it friendly and accessible for everyone."

Former show co-ordinator Karin Buchanan said at least eight 麻豆社国产area riders will be competing in the dressage class on the weekend but she expects more riders from Pemberton to compete in the new division as well.

"We are attracting a new group of people now."

Also new to this year's series is a point system that rewards riders' participation in the same division throughout the year. Riders who compete in the hunter division in all three season shows can potentially acquire more points than a rider who switches divisions for each show.

"The more that you show and stay in the divisions you choose, the more points you accumulate if you win ribbons," Pakstas said.

"So the more you show up and the more classes you ride in, the more chances you have."

Riders have a chance to win ribbons, points and a slew of prizes ranging from gift certificates to horse gear or cash prizes. Something SVEA riders haven't had the opportunity to do in the past.

"I guess there haven't really been prizes like that in the past so this is going to be fun and new for the kids."

The day starts at 9 a.m. with the dressage show followed by several hours of performance at the Loggers Lane equestrian grounds.

The family-friendly event is free of charge and suitable for audience members of all ages. A barbecue lunch and show programs will be available for purchase.

"It's fun for anyone," Pakstas said. "Especially if you have some horse-crazy kids, they can just come and see what it's all about."

Pakstas said dogs brought to the show must be leashed at all times.

SVEA horse shows will take place on Sunday (May 16), Sunday July 11 and Sunday Sept. 19 and fun Gymkhana game days are scheduled for Sunday June 13, Sunday Aug. 15 and Sunday Oct. 17.

The show will take place at the equestrian grounds located off Loggers Lane north of Finch Avenue and south of Brennan Park Recreation Centre.

Anyone interested in volunteering with the SVEA, buying ad space in the show programs or donating prizes can contact Pakstas at 778-888-3744 or via email at [email protected].
