After an entire season of being undefeated, team Canex finally succumbed to a loss.
The second weekend of the Howe Sound Men's Soccer League playoffs saw a nail biting game between Ellis Moving Eagles and Canex which resulted in a final score of 2-1 for Ellis.
Canex's Kevin Schellenberg scored a goal early on in the first half but team Ellis fought back.
"We ran hard right from the start of the game," said coach Dan Ellis.
"I think we were fairing very well, maybe even carrying the play for the first half."
Before the end of the first half, James Bellinger scored an equalizing goal for Ellis giving his team members a morale booster.
After a fairly even competition with a few close calls for either team, Ellis managed to squeak out a goal off a corner kick.
Despite a few profanities from players and the ref giving a quick instructional on how to wait for the whistle, the game was gut wrenching to watch.
"It was fun to watch but nerve wracking for me as a coach because I can't get out there," Ellis said.
Ellis said the on field bickering wasn't that bad, in fact it was probably par for the course.
"That's just part of soccer in Squamish. People get their spirits up and they direct it somewhere."
Ellis said the win against Canex was a huge one for the team because Canex is a very tough team.
"We're in a good position now and if we continue with this kind of play there's a chance we'll win the championship."
On the other end of Brennan Park fields, a less evenly matched game between Zephyr and Dyer Straits ended in a win for Dyer 8 to 0. Dyer easily out manoeuvred Zephyr.
"It wasn't a very hard game," said Dyer Straits coach Dan Harrison.
"We played very well but we missed a few chances [] It was a strongly contested game but over all we were the stronger team, the far stronger team."
Harrison added Zephyr worked hard and played clean.
"The other team tried very hard but it was one sided."
Zephyr coach Peter Cox said he found the game was played very clean as well.
"It was gentlemanly, almost ridiculous how gentlemanly."
Dyer players Ronan Deane, Dan Kingston and Istuan Richter, each scored two goals apiece while Charles Carter scored one and Zephyr scored one on their own net.
Dyer Straits will be sitting out next weekend while the remaining four teams play each other. After two weeks, Khalsa, Dyer Straits, Canex and Ellis Moving Eagles are in a four-way tie with three points each. Zephyr is in last place with zero.
