Ellis, Canex tied for first place

Khalsa, Dyer Straights tied for second in Howe Sound Men's Soccer League

After three weeks of finals in the Howe Sound Men's Soccer League, Ellis Moving Eagles and Canex are tied for first place with six points each.

Both teams made the jump to first place after securing a win a piece at games held at Brennan Park on Sunday (March 21).

In a fairly even match up a sub-less Khalsa played Ellis ending in a 4-1 win for Ellis.

With a few close calls resulting in shots hitting the goal posts and bouncing away, Khalsa managed to grab just one goal in the first half.

Scorers for Ellis included Matt Rollinson and Nathan Ward while Khalsa forward Richard Collins scored a penalty shot for Khalsa.

Khalsa defenseman Nevin Binning said the team played a good first half but threw the game away in the last half.

"The first half we played really well, just the second half we kind of beat ourselves and Ellis is a really good team," Binning said.

"We just had a bad game. We wished we could have done better but we got outplayed in the second half. They're a good team."

Khalsa's intricate footwork couldn't stop Ellis's Nathan Ward scoring for a second time during the game or Chris Knight from scoring the last goal of the game.

Red card recipient, Ellis player Ian Warren was tossed out of the game and is scheduled to miss one upcoming game because of unsportsmanship conduct.

On the adjacent field, the desire of Zephyr FC to put up a good fight was no match for Canex's goal scoring abilities. Canex challenged Zephyr's goalkeeper with plenty of shots on net but Zephyr just could not stop a dozen goals from entering into their net.

A penalty kick started the cascade of goals Canex managed to fire at Zephyr which ended the game with a final score of 12 to 2.

"We could have done better, we could have scored more," said Canex coach, manager and player Ron Nahanee.

Nahanee said he thought Canex should have been able to score even more goals, against the last place Zephyr FC team.

"It should have been a whole lot more, like Kevin Schellenberg had a whole lot of chances."

Canex defence lagged at least twice in the game, allowing the feisty Zephyr to capitalize and score two morale-boosting goals.

At 10 a.m. on Saturday (March 28) Dyer Straits is scheduled to play Khalsa at Brennan Park. Both teams are tied for second place in the league finals with one win and one loss each.

Also at 10 a.m. on Sunday (March 28) first place contenders Ellis Moving is scheduled to play team Zephyr.

No games are scheduled for Sunday (April 4) however match-ups will return on Saturday April 10 with Ellis Moving playing again Dyer Straits and Canex competing against Khalsa.

Nahanee said team Canex will be well prepared for the Khalsa game on Saturday April 10, against Khalsa.

"We plan to keep practicing, stay in shape and get ready for Khalsa because they're a tough team."
