Whistler Nordics, Spud Valley Nordics rack up eight medals at Teck Coast Cup opener

Nicholas Pigeon, Sasha Hamm top their respective age categories

Out of the 248 athletes at last Saturday's Teck Coast Cup season kickoff in Callaghan Valley, 25 represented Whistler Nordics and another eight skied for Spud Valley Nordics. A total of eight cracked the overall podium in each of their divisions.

Three such medallists are part of the race roster. Nicholas Pigeon won gold in the senior men's division and his fellow coach Lesley Clements earned bronze for masters women. Their pupil Alex Bodkin was third in his U12 event.

Holden Wilson and Ella Koshul likewise received bronze medals in the boys' U16 and girls' U14 categories respectively.

Meanwhile, Meja Koshul clinched silver among U10 girls.

Sasha Hamm triumphed in the U10 boys race and Samuel Fortier placed third.

Sunny skies, temperatures just below freezing and excellent overall snow conditions greeted the field, with Sea to Sky Nordics, Hollyburn Cross-Country Ski Club, Nordic Racers and Tetrahedron - Dakota Ridge Nordics joining Whistler and Spud Valley.

Competitors varied in age from three-year-old Ingrid McMurty to 73-year-old para-athlete Bill Moore.

"We are thrilled with the turnout and the competitive spirit shown by athletes of all ages,” said Chief of Competition Chelsea Little in a press release. "It’s inspiring to see such a broad spectrum of athletes, from young children just starting to elite competitors, all coming together to enjoy cross-country skiing."
