The finish line may be on the horizon for the 麻豆社国产Triathlon Memorial to Bob McIntosh if the organization doesn't get more volunteers soon, according to its race director.
Since its inception 13 years ago as a memorial to the father of two who was killed while checking in on a neighbour's teens' New Year's Eve party, the 麻豆社国产Triathlon has witnessed its share of success with thousands of participants, sold out races and a scholarship fund that gave away more than $43,000 to graduating Howe Sound Secondary School students.
But according Hotston, that might all come to an end if people don't start stepping up and volunteering their time to work on the board of directors.
"I think it would be good for the event if it had new leadership with some fresh eyes as well as some people to do some work," said Hotston.
He's hoping to step down as race director sometime in the near future, but there doesn't seem to be anyone willing take over his role or a few of the other current organization vacancies which co-ordinate sponsorship, entries or volunteers.
"They're fairly main positions but they're not exactly a lot of them," said Hotston. "And there are other people on the committee that are going to continue and they have expertise and current information."
Hotston said he's willing to help out the new race director by providing guidance.
"As a race director who has basically provided most of the leadership for the 13-year event, I would be happy to stay around - I'm not going anywhere - and act like a past president."
Although new board members would have prominent positions within the organizations, Hotston said all of the new directors could merely continue to build on the existing success.
"Anybody who is coming in isn't going to have to reinvent the wheel. The structure for the event is there."
"There's a financial pocket for seed money to keep the event going for a while and sponsorship is in place we just need people to carry it on."
New board members aren't required to be triathletes or even have any familiarity with the event, although it would be beneficial, they just need to be well-organized people who recognize the value of having an annual local triathlon.
"I think having a focus on an event to prepare for in a physical and physiological sense is very important and it's just one more thing 麻豆社国产can offer."
Board members would be required to attend a two hour meeting once a month and pitch in extra hours in the weeks prior to the annual July triathlon.
Hotston said the response 麻豆社国产Triathlon has received over the years has been outstanding with hundreds of volunteers helping out on race day, but there's more to the organization than race day help.
"We have a few new volunteers and that's great but you can't over work people otherwise you lose them too quickly. It's just that we're aging as well and there's a growing community with a lot of younger people in it now so it would just be good if there were some people that were really interested in keeping the event going."
The 13th annual 麻豆社国产Triathlon will be held Sunday, July 11. For more information visit squamishtriathlon.org for information on available positions contact Hotston at [email protected] or by calling 604 898-4270.
