Postseason rugby is around the corner in British Columbia and both Axemen teams have made the cut.
secured a regular-season title with their recent 59-22 home victory against Kamloops. What began as a tightly contested match opened up in the second half as multiple Sea to Sky players punched in long-range tries to earn a first-round bye and a playoff semifinal on April 27 in Squamish.
Meanwhile, the Axemen's Division 3 branch avenged an earlier loss to Burnaby Lake with a 54-5 trouncing of the Vancouver-area club. Led by Ollie Richards and Ian Skuse, they finish top-eight in the standings and head to Kelowna for a Saturday, April 20 quarterfinal game at Parkinson Recreation Centre. It will be the first Division 3 postseason tilt in club history.
"Thanks to the large number of supporters who came to cheer on the teams and the Backyard Pub for the post game celebrations and rehydration!" wrote a club spokesperson on social media. "As always, thanks also to our wonderful group of sponsors supporting rugby in the Sea to Sky Corridor!"
In other news, the Axemen are also hosting a spring youth rugby jamboree on Sunday, April 21 at Don Ross Middle School. From 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., visiting teams from Burnaby, North Vancouver, Kitsilano and Richmond will mingle with local players and coaches in a social celebration of sport.
