"This has been absolutely exceptional up here at Whistler. I've been coming to Whistler since 1985 and I'm not sure that I've seen three such glorious days in a row, but we got to show it off to the world," said Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler CEO Scott Moore at a press conference. "So thank you, Mayor Jack [Crompton], for the weather. Thank you, Belinda [Trembath] for the incredible warmth and hospitality. [Virginia Cullen] from the RMOW deserves a big thank-you. Barrett Fisher from Tourism Whistler.
"The welcome the world has gotten here has been truly unbelievable, and we can't keep the tears off our cheeks either. Assunta Aquino...has been with us on the entire journey. I met her at an event we did in May, before she was even named to Team Canada. She was so excited about the opportunity, and then to get a chance to hug her after gold medal was amazing."
Brochu was likewise thrilled to compete at the Invictus Games, saying: "It's not just a year of hard work, but a lifetime of overcoming visible and invisible injuries that I face as a result of my [Army] service. It's just amazing to be with my fellow teammates and military veterans from around the world celebrating our victory over the losses we've all suffered. The snow is squeaky under my ski and...I wasn't even nervous, the energy is so good here."
Whistler has played it's part in hosting athletes from around the globe, and the remaining competitions will be held a couple of hours south on Highway 99. Wheelchair rugby kicks off Thursday at 8:20 a.m. in the Vancouver Convention Centre (VCC) with the gold medal match scheduled for 8:40 p.m.
The Maury Young Arts Centre hosts 麻豆社国产Lil’wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) Ambassador storytelling at 2 and 5 p.m. tomorrow, while the final day of Village Square music features DJ Vinyl Ritchie at 2:30 p.m. and Skratch Bastid at 3:30 p.m.
