As soon as director/choreographer Ryan Mooney heard that local producer Mike Hewitt wanted to put on the musical comedy Little Shop of Horrors he jumped at the chance to be involved.
"It's great fun, even if you don't like musicals," said Mooney.
Made famous by the 1986 musical movie starring Rick Moranis, Steve Martin, Jim Belushi and Bill Murray, the story features a sweet girl, a daring hero, a demented dentist and a singing plant. The unlikely plot involves a nerdy florist (Mike Ciccone) who finds his chance for success and love with Audrey (Rebecca Hall) with the help of a giant man-eating plant.
"It's a timeless tale," said Mooney. "The man's creation gets out of control, like Frankenstein."
Drawing on the Broadway musical, the eight cast members will treat fans of the movie to seven new songs. The cast is taking on the challenge of singing while dancing and acting. With the help of musical director Fran Booth, the narrators, played by Valentina Oreamuno, Sarah Fuller and Andrea Lake, are putting in long hours to deliver perfect three-part harmonies.
The play will be performed at the Eagle Eye Theatre Thursday to Saturday (April 21 to 23) as well as Thursday April 28 and Saturday April 30. Doors open at 7 p.m. with the performance starting at 7:30 p.m. Matin茅es will also be performed at 2 p.m. on Saturdays (April 23 and 30).
