A chance to laugh about growing older

Norman Foote, August trio and Doreen Ramus to perform at Brackendale Art Gallery this weekend
The August trio of Rae Armour, Beverley Elliott and Lind Kidder is joining Norman Foote and Doreen Ramus in a comedic performance at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Saturday.

Seemingly mundane events and obstacles facing baby boomers will be given a hilarious twist this weekend at the Brackendale Art Gallery.聽

Lost your car keys? Made a 鈥渟elf-sabotaging鈥 phone call? Have 鈥渟houlda-coulda-woulda鈥 regrets? Struggling with menopause?

Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter Norman Foote and the August trio, along with special guest Doreen Ramus, will touch on all these subjects and more during an evening of singing and comedy on Saturday at 8 p.m.聽

The Vancouver-based August members, Linda Kidder, Rae Armour and Beverley Elliott, are known for their self-written melodies, humour and wit.聽

Foote, who sings about the small things other songwriters may overlook, fits right in.聽

鈥淚t鈥檚 not common to find someone with great musicianship who is also funny, but here you have it,鈥 said Foote, speaking of the August trio.聽

Foote will be playing with themes in pop culture in comedic renditions and adaptions during the show.聽

Elliott said the songs are lighthearted and warm, and she advises to keep a tissue on hand for any fits of laughter.聽

鈥淟ife is challenging, so it鈥檚 good to look on the bright side,鈥 said Elliott, who is accompanied by guitarist Daryl Jahnky. 鈥淢en can relate too. They鈥檒l say, 鈥極h yeah, have you ever put up with this too?鈥欌

The nitty-gritty details of experiences that come with growing older, including the perils of Facebook reunions, unrequited love, credit card challenges and the woes of stolen cars, will be brought to life through a combination of August鈥檚 pop, roots and jazz styles, threaded with personal anecdotes and confessions.聽

Elliott, who plays Granny in the fairytale TV drama series Once Upon a Time, says she received requests for the group to return to the Brackendale Art Gallery. 鈥淚鈥檝e had people say, 鈥業 wish I would have brought my sister or aunt to the show鈥 鈥 and now they can see us again,鈥 she said.聽

Along with his live-action props and puppets, Foote will be performing classics from his Juno Award-winning album Love My New Shirt and tunes from his 2013 release, Always Be Yourself.

Foote spent time living in 麻豆社国产as a child and left his home in Vancouver at the age of 20 to make his way across Australia and New Zealand as a street performer and songster. Enthralled with music, props and comedy, he chose the only feasible career to settle down in 鈥 a comedic performer.聽

A longtime friend and a second mother to Foote, Ramus is making a special cameo appearance with a comedic skit. She was Foote鈥檚 neighbour in 麻豆社国产and has watched him play guitar since he was 11 years old.聽

鈥淚鈥檒l go along with whatever Norm has planned. If you鈥檙e familiar with him, you鈥檒l know you can never know what to expect,鈥 said Ramus, who is a founding member of the Howe Sound Drama Club and an integral part of the formation of Squamish鈥檚 theatre scene. 鈥淚 predict he鈥檒l ask me questions about the drama club, my book and what it was like when I moved to 麻豆社国产50 years ago, but you never really know.鈥

Tickets for the show are available at the Brackendale Art Gallery and Xoco Westcoast Chocolatiers.聽
