The 麻豆社国产Relay for Life gets under way at Brennan Park tonight (June 5) with the opening ceremonies at 7 p.m. The Survivors' and Caregivers' Victory Lap and the Team Parade begins at 7:15 p.m. The lighting of the Luminaries begins at 10 p.m. Proceeds from the Relay for Life support research into all types of cancer provide valuable information services and help educate Canadians on cancer risks and prevention strategies. Organizers of the 麻豆社国产Relay hope to reach a fundraising total of $130,000. Entertainers during the 12 hour relay include the Don Ross Secondary School Jazz Band, Ali Milner, Susan Holden and Carolyn Grass and Friends. The closing and Fight Back Ceremony will be held at 6:45 a.m. on Saturday. Good luck to all the teams!
An invitation is extended to everyone to attend the 40th Annual Open House at the North Vancouver Outdoor School on Sunday (June 7) from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Paradise Valley. This free family event is a chance to explore a school that runs unique environmental and cultural programs in a spectacular park-like setting. The all weather fields at Brennan Park are the new location for the Drive-In Theatre on Sunday (June 7) when Indiana Jones will be shown at dusk. Gurmukh Johal, singer, song writer and resident of 麻豆社国产will be launching his current CD at the 麻豆社国产Public Library on Thursday (June 11) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. His stage moniker, G. Jogi Daduwalia reflects his name and the village he originally came from in India. He has been in India for the production of his CD and will be returning there shortly to perform at weddings and country fairs. His wife Gurjit is well known in the community for her work with ESL storytime at the library, with the South Asian Senior Women's Group and with bhangra dance classes at Brennan Park Recreation Centre. Gurmukh and Gurjit will be performing some of his songs on Thursday and there will be CD's for sale.

I along with many others were saddened to learn of the passing of former resident Gwen Friesen of New Westminster on May 27 after a courageous battle with cancer. Gwen was a nurse at the 麻豆社国产General Hospital for many years and she always had the time and compassion to help others having a rough time. Our sympathy is extended to her husband Dennis and her sons Doug and Ross and families.
