Search called off for missing Washington boaters; body of woman, 64, found

Two men in their 60s are still missing after a 15-foot pleasure craft capsized off Neah Bay, Washington, last week.

The U.S. Coast Guard has recovered the body of a woman, but two men in their 60s are still missing after a 15-foot pleasure craft capsized off Neah Bay, Washington, last week.

The coast guard found the boat near Koitlah Point, but suspended the search for the missing men over the weekend pending new information.

The Puget Sound sector of the U.S. Coast Guard had received a report from the Makah Tribal Police Department at 11 p.m. on April 16 that a vessel had failed to return to its slip at 8 p.m. as scheduled.

The coast guard responded with multiple aircraft and vessels alongside tribal, local, state and federal partners as well as the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Victoria.

Rescue crews searched 850 square nautical miles over a 28-hour period.

The body of a 64-year-old female was recovered on Thursday afternoon. The two missing men are 63 and 69. The three boaters are related and are residents of Snohomish County, Washington.

“The decision to suspend the search pending new information is not an easy one,” said U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Mark McDonell, commander of the Puget Sound coast guard sector.

“The U.S. Coast Guard is grateful for the support from our international, state and tribal partners who also searched a significant amount of area near Neah Bay. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing boaters.”
