People are being reminded to ensure items on patios or decks are tied down and secure after furniture blew off during a windstorm on Nov. 4, 2024.

A piece of patio furniture that blew off a building is the culprit for thousands of people losing power.

BC Hydro says nearly 14,000 customers lost power on Monday in White Rock and South Surrey.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement Monday for the Lower Mainland due to strong winds and heavy rain.

The weather statement even asked people to make sure loose objects that could be tossed by wind were removed.

BC Hydro shared a photo of the damage done to their White Rock substation after a patio furniture cover blew off a deck at a nearby highrise.

“This is a good reminder … to ensure items on your patio or deck are tied down and secure,” says a spokesperson with BC Hydro.

Crews worked to restore .
