'Queen of the House' singer Jody Miller dies at age 80

BLANCHARD, Okla. (AP) 鈥 Jody Miller, whose 鈥淨ueen of the House鈥 won the 1966 Grammy Award for best country performance by a woman, died Thursday at age 80.

BLANCHARD, Okla. (AP) 鈥 Jody Miller, whose 鈥淨ueen of the House鈥 won the 1966 Grammy Award for best country performance by a woman, died Thursday at age 80.

Miller died in her hometown of Blanchard, Oklahoma, of complications from Parkinson鈥檚 disease, according to Universal Music Group, owner of Capitol Records, which released most of her hits.

鈥淨ueen of the House鈥 was released in 1965 as an answer to Roger Miller鈥檚 hit 鈥淜ing of the Road.鈥 The hit opened up a crossover career for Jody Miller, who wasn鈥檛 related to the 鈥淜ing of the Road鈥 composer and singer.

Her 1965 teen protest song 鈥淗ome of the Brave鈥 was her biggest-selling single, despite being banned from some radio stations鈥 playlists. Another hit was 鈥淟ong Black Limousine,鈥 a song about a man's funeral procession.

In the 1970s, Miller moved to Epic Records, where she had hits with 鈥淏aby I鈥檓 Yours,鈥 There鈥檚 a Party Goin鈥 On,鈥 鈥淒arling, You Can Always Come Back Home,鈥 and the Grammy-nominated crossover hit cover of 鈥淗e鈥檚 So Fine.鈥

She retired in the 1980s to spend more time with her husband and children. After her husband's death, she recorded a 2018 single, 鈥淲here My Picture Hangs on the Wall,鈥 with daughter Robin Brooks Sullivan and Miller's two grandchildren.
