BEIJING (AP) 鈥 The U.S. men鈥檚 curling team isn鈥檛 dwelling on the last time it played Sweden at the Olympics.
It's thinking of the next time.
In a rematch of the Pyeongchang gold medal match, Sweden beat John Shuster鈥檚 foursome 7-4 on Thursday to take an early lead in the round-robin standings and hand the defending champions their first loss of the Beijing Games.
The result left the Americans hoping for a rematch against Niklas Edin's foursome, which could happen only if they both qualify for the playoffs.
鈥淚 can鈥檛 think of very many Olympics or world championships where Niklas isn鈥檛 somewhere hanging around at the end of the week,鈥 said Chris Plys, a newcomer to Shuster鈥檚 team since Pyeongchang. 鈥淲e hope to be there with them and I鈥檇 love to get another crack at them, for sure.鈥
Four years after Team Shuster won five straight elimination games 鈥 including a victory over Edin that clinched the first U.S. gold medal in Olympic curling history 鈥 it was the Swedes celebrating.
Trailing 7-4 in the 10th and final end, Shuster conceded after Edin left the Americans with just one stone in the target area and just one more to play.
鈥淲hen you鈥檙e playing against the reigning world champions and you get opportunities, you got to take advantage of those,鈥 Shuster said. 鈥淲e're going to have to fight tooth and nail to get every win here.鈥
The Swedes improved to 2-0 in Beijing and the defending champions fell to 1-1. Edin also took a 5-4 edge against Shuster dating to the 2018 gold medal match.
鈥淲e play them tons of times. It鈥檚 always close battles, always good games,鈥 Edin said. 鈥淪o we knew was going to be a big one 鈥 both our teams are playoff contenders 鈥 so winning this is big.鈥
The Americans started the match with the last-rock advantage known as the hammer, but they missed a chance for a big score in the first end and settled for one point. Sweden took two with the hammer in the second, two more with the hammer in the fourth and then stole a point in the fifth when the U.S. was supposed to have the edge.
It was a two-point game in the eighth when Edin executed a tricky cross-house double takeout and Shuster couldn鈥檛 complete one of his own. The Americans intentionally blanked the ninth end to retain the last-rock advantage.
But in the final end, they ran out of rocks.
鈥淭hey鈥檙e good friends of ours. It鈥檚 really nice to beat them and also just get ahead in that head-to-head battle that is going on, especially since the last Olympics,鈥 said Edin, a five-time world champion who also won a bronze medal in Sochi to go with the silver from Pyeongchang. 鈥淲e know they are one of the gold medal contenders here.鈥
In other results from men鈥檚 play on Thursday, the Russian team beat China 7-4 in nine ends, Canada edged Norway 6-5 and Britain beat Italy 7-5.
Women鈥檚 play opened Thursday morning with Tabitha Peterson's American team winning twice, beating the Russian team 9-3 in seven ends in the morning and Denmark 7-5 at night.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a great position to be in," Peterson said. 鈥淲e worked hard out there. I think we deserve it. So hopefully we can keep what we鈥檙e doing rolling into the next couple of games.鈥
The other women's matches saw defending champion Sweden beat Japan 8-5 in the morning but lose 8-2 to Britain in seven ends. Britain is 2-0, having beaten beat Switzerland 6-5 in extra ends in the morning.
In other action, Canada beat reigning silver medalist South Korea 12-7 and host China lost two times, 7-6 to Denmark in the morning and 7-5 to Switzerland at night.
