University RCMP issued over $5,000 in fines to partying UBC students on Saturday night for violating B.C.'s current public health orders.

In total, officers issued $5,060 in Public Health Order fines to UBC students for violating health orders restricting social gatherings, explains an RCMP news release.

Officers handed two $2,300 fines to organizers of the gatherings and two personal $230 fines.

The University RCMP adds that it has collaborated with the University of British Columbia to educate and warn students for several months about not gathering in groups around campus as well as the importance of following the Public Health Orders.

"We are now a year into this pandemic, people are well aware of the orders and we all have to do our part," says Media Relations Officer Cst. Christina Martin.

Individuals and businesses can be served a violation ticket

All events and gatherings are suspended, except for a select few defined in the orders. Individuals and businesses can be served a violation ticket of either $230 as an attendee or $2,300 as an organizer or host for non-compliance.

University RCMP states that it will continue to take all reports of social gatherings and parties seriously.

"The Province of British Columbia remains under a Public Health Order until further notice from the Public Health Officer. Students are reminded to limit their social interactions and stick to their core group, which includes those that you live with or 1-2 people for those that live alone," adds the RCMP.

The University of British Columbia has also advised students who fail to adhere to the Public Health Order that they may also face non-academic disciplinary actions set out by the University.
