A teenage driver had his vehicle impounded by Nanaimo RCMP after doing “donuts” in a snowy parking lot on Monday night — just hours after being given a warning by police for a similar incident.

The 18-year-old was handed a $368 ticket for driving without consideration, had his Toyota 4Runner impounded for a week and earned six demerit points on his licence.

After receiving reports of excessive noise and a vehicle making erratic moves, police arrived at the Nanaimo North Town Centre mall about 7 p.m.

When they stopped the vehicle, which had two passengers, one of the officers recognized the driver from the previous encounter.

“In some cases, verbal warnings can be an effective deterrent,” said Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien. “However, in this case it didn’t seem to have any impact on the individual nor his driving habits.”

Police said the driver was “quite apologetic” after the second incident and said he had learned his lesson.
