B.C.'s police watchdog is investigating the death of a Surrey teen following a police confrontation on Sunday.
In a statement to Glacier Media, the Surrey School District confirmed a student from Clayton Heights Secondary "sadly passed away over the weekend."
"Counsellors will be on-site at Clayton Heights Secondary to support staff, students and the community," said spokesperson Rena Kaur Heer.
Around 2:40 p.m. on Feb. 9, police were called about a distressed individual reportedly armed with a firearm in a school yard in the 7000-block of 188th Street.
According to the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO), there was an interaction between the person and police near the intersection of 70 Avenue and 185 Street during which shots were fired by police.
"The person sustained a gunshot-related injury,” said a spokesperson with IIO.
The person, whose age has not been released, died at the scene. No one else was injured during the incident.
Police have cordoned off the area for the investigation.
